Introduction

Welcome to a magical and unique way to explore your life's journey and gain wisdom and insight about where you've been, where you are now, and where you're heading. What do fate, destiny, and the forces of synchronicity and Spirit have in store for you? These cards were designed specifically to empower you to find an­swers to these questions ... and more.

All of my oracle-card decks are in­spired by, and are derivations of, ancient divination systems such as the Tarot, Norse runes, and the 1-Ching; and are modern­ized for you to use today, with language that you can understand. Each one has a different and specific theme. Although I created The Enchanted Map oracle system

as a companion to my book The Map, it can also be used as a stand-alone intuitive- guidance tool.

The themes of these cards are related to a journey, representing the symbolic places you might visit, the conditions you may encounter, and the allies and chal­lengers you could meet on a metaphoric map that tells the story of your life. How­ever, the symbols in this oracle system are metaphors for your inner life, not your external one. Your thoughts, feelings, be­liefs, memories, and intentions create the "places" you inhabit or visit throughout your journey. These places are archetypal and universal, even if they have a deeply personal meaning for you.

We've all experienced stormy emo­tions and the sunny elation of joy. We've all met a sabotaging Goblin within us who will steal our "firstborn" and refuse to re­linquish power until we name him and ac­cept his hold on us. Yet as an oracle, each card will also have a personal message for you that will help you gain wisdom.

Imagine . . . between the visible and the unseen is a guiding force that some call Spirit, the Holy Will, the Divine, the Field, or Consciousness. This force is ever­creative, causing shifts and changes in the world—in your world—transforming you as the journey of your life evolves. You are part of that Consciousness, too: influenc­ing, dreaming, deciding, loving, choos­ing, and intending as you send out your own intentional signal, like an integral note in a symphony. Using these cards will connect you to the larger Consciousness. When you choose one, it symbolizes how you're in alignment with this vast intelli­gence that can show you what you're un­able to see or understand unaided.

Before you work with these cards, you should familiarize yourself with them. The beautiful artwork is clear and evocative, with layers of deep and deliberate mean­ing, so spend some time looking at the illustrations and become aware of your re­sponse to them. Read this guidebook and learn the stories that these cards tell. Then, when you're ready to do a reading for the first time, shuffle them 11 times as a ritual to signify opening the sacred doorway be­tween the world of form and the invisible causal energies that influence that world.

Please do this meditation before you begin:

With your eyes closed, listen to your favorite meditation music. Breathe deep­ly and relax.

Imagine that you're looking out from a sacred temple, standing in the doorway between two large white pil­lars of energy. In front of you are 11 steps that lead to the beginning of a winding pathway gleaming with living

energy. You can see that it wanders through many different landscapes: a wild forest, an icy and barren land, a mountainous region, stormy fields, and sunny meadows. Everything here is alive. Even the trees know you and can speak to you.

An angel arrives and hands you a beautiful compass.

She says, "Use this and you will never be lost again. Always know that True North is Spirit, which is the magic in the world. Orient to Spirit and expect to see miracles everywhere. Spirit is the true reality, the only truth."

A white owl flies toward you with a happy expression on its face.

The angel laughs. "Go with your new friend and be well. The adventure awaits!" The angel hands you a small box.

Open it... here are your cards!

Now imagine that the owl circles you and you become surrounded by a beautiful white light . . . and slowly feel yourself being brought back to this

reality. Take your cards in both hands and speak these words to them:

"I bless you, and in the name of Spirit, 1 ask for your guidance. Show me what I cannot see, confirm what 1 know, and help me that I may serve the highest good of all!"

The Purpose of the Cards

These cards are meant to become your personal guide to explore the path you're on, chart a new course, retrace your steps to understand how you got to where you are, or perhaps choose another destination altogether. They'll provide you with in­sight, as well as deeper questions to consid­er as you seek to understand yourself and your purpose in the world. They’ll help you with all aspects of your journey: the relationships you engage in, the work you do, and the lessons you must learn in order to explore the sacred contract you made

when you chose to come here as a spirit and take human form.

As with any divination system, these cards can be used as a predictive oracle, but their greatest and most powerful pur­pose is to empower you to make conscious, creative choices and know the next right action (or the consequences of a choice you may make). These oracle cards were devised to help you see the patterns that repeat throughout your life, and provide guidance on how to shift any that are self­sabotaging.

The cards show you the continuity of your steps and remind you that life is meant to be an adventure. They prompt you to recall that whenever you're con­fused about your experience, you need to consult your intuition. If you're willing to bypass reason and logic and draw upon your imagination and inner knowing, you can enter another place of self-discovery where you’re able to shape your reality.

The more you use these cards, the bet­ter you’ll understand their messages, as you develop a dynamic relationship with

them and add your own meanings to their wisdom. And tire more you exercise your conscious awareness and commitment to co-create your life, the more magic you'll begin to see, with synchronicities beckon­ing to you along your adventurous journey on your Enchanted Map!

How to Do a Reading

Always approach a reading as a sacred act of inquiry. Never ask frivolous ques­tions; otherwise, the cards are likely to send you on a wild-goose chase. The same will happen if you pose the identical ques­tion over and over again, hoping to get the answer you want.

The cards are your sacred helpers, bridg­ing the worlds of the unseen and the mate­rial. So when you begin, say your prayer, blessing the cards and thanking them for their guidance. Quiet your mind. Then think of a question that doesn't require a yes/no answer.

Here are some examples of appropriate questions:

• What is the nature of this situation?
• How will this situation progress?
• What do 1 need to know or focus on today?
• What do I need to know about my relationship?
• How can 1 best serve the highest good in this situation?
• What can I expect from this relationship/job/person?
• What is the next right action that will help me progress on my path?
• If 1 take my intended action, what will be the result?

These cards are meant to strengthen your intuition and help you trust it more. Allow your higher knowing to show you the way, and don't be afraid to ask again if the answer isn't clear. Your relationship to the oracle cards will grow and only get better over time.

Sample Readings and an Explanation of the Positions

Each of these cards has a general arche­typal meaning, and also a slightly differ­ent one based on position and orientation (upright or reversed). Upright, the cards rep­resent the purest and most positive energy. Reversed cards require you to look at the shadow side of what they represent, and encourage you to be aware and conscious. Perhaps you have to make a difficult choice? Regardless, receiving a reversed card will always lead to a positive and sup­portive result. Reversed cards are power­ful and should never be seen as negative; rather, they serve to shed the most light on your areas of inquiry.

So, for example, if you choose a one- card reading, you'll interpret a single card, determining how its meaning applies to the situation you're asking about. If you do a three-card reading, the same card will mean something slightly different de­pending on its placement in relationship to the other two.

Unlike a one- or three-card reading, a six-card reading features a “challenging" position: the card in that spot must be in­terpreted as a call to a particular action you must take. That said, it's always valu­able to know all the potential meanings of the cards. You may gain insight from a card even if it's not placed in the position that would seem to make the most sense. Let your intuition guide you as to its true meaning for you.

Here are some examples of the various ways to work with these cards:

One-Card Reading

Tara was feeling unsure about her rela­tionship to Jack. He was busy all the time, and she felt ignored. Lately, she'd been thinking, He's not the man I thought he was. But she cared for him and wondered where the relationship was heading, so she asked the cards:

"What do I need to know about my relationship with lack?"

After shuffling the deck, she closed her eyes and prayed to receive guidance for the highest good of both of them. Then she chose a card. (A card can be selected from anywhere in the deck once you intuitively feel that it's time to do so. There's no right or wrong way to choose: off the top ... or from the bottom, the middle, or anywhere in the deck is okay!)

Tara chose the One-Ring Circus card.

As this card is about independence, it "woke" Tara up. In fact, when she consid­ered this message, what came to mind intu­itively was that Jack was trying to become financially independent, and although they'd spent a lot of time together initially, he was paying less attention to her because he was working. Seeing this behavior as healthy, she felt that perhaps she needed to be more understanding. Plus, she thought, maybe I'm placing too much importance on his constant attentiveness. She decided to pull another card with this new attitude in mind.

Tara chose Come Together. This card relates to romance, love, and marriage— a truly fortunate sign!

Three-Card Reading

In a three-card reading, the positions are:

1. 1. The past influence
2. 2. The present point of vantage
3. 3. The probable future destination

Jillian was a single woman living in New York City. She'd been lonely ever since her divorce and wanted to know why she hadn't met anyone special. She was ready to date, having been in therapy for five years, but so far she hadn’t encountered a single situation with romantic potential. On the night she was to go on a blind date, she was understandably apprehensive. She asked the cards to reveal what she could expect with this man all her friends were raving about.

The cards she chose were:

1. 1. Stuck in the Mud: being stuck, immobilized, unable to move forward
2. 2. Intention: a positive outcome for desires that have been placed in Spirit's care
3. 3. Wide Open: receptivity and nonattachment

Jillian was surprised by how accurate the cards seemed to be. The first card spoke

to her and how she'd been feeling. The rea­son she'd gone into therapy was that she'd felt immobilized by her divorce and afraid to move forward because this failed mar­riage had been her third abusive relation­ship. Her movement had been restricted, but essentially this had served a very good purpose, allowing her to look around and do healing on herself.

The second card reflected her positive intention. She had changed, and her in­tention was clear, as was her faith that the right guy would come into her life!

The third card reminded her to be open to new possibilities without being attached to the form they might take. If her inten­tion was clear and her faith solid, then why should she expect the worst? She decided to be open to a new kind of man, maybe a nicer one than she’d been involved with previously.

She went on the date with an open mind and heart, and it led to a relationship with a wonderful partner!

Six-Card Reading

In a six-card reading, the positions are:

1. 1. The past influence
2. 2. The present point of vantage
3. 3. What you resist
4. 4. Unexpected help
5. 5. The next right action
6. 6. The probable future destination

Kim lost her job when her company downsized. She had been there for a long time and felt betrayed by her boss, who let her go after she'd helped him break the news to others.

Kim was 50 years old and had grown tired of corporate politics. She'd always wanted to become a baker, but due to pressure from her parents, she'd gotten her business degree and had become an accountant. She was at a crossroads and afraid, but was certain that this layoff was a sign that she should consider a different

path. Should she look for another account­ing job, perhaps with a different type of company, or take a risk and start an organ­ic bread company?

She formed her question for the oracle:

"What can I expect if I pursue starting up a bread business instead of applying for another accounting job?"

These are the six cards she drew, in order, and their meanings:

1. 1. Bone Collector: reclaiming lost or stolen power
2. 2. Mountain: getting around an obstacle
3. 3. Slow and Steady (reversed): slow' movement
4. 4. Magical Map Shifter (reversed): a person/thing/event that appears to change your life
5. 5. Coining Apart: diverging paths
6. 6. Field of Dreams: a place of pure potential

Kim was deeply moved by the first card, representing the past influence. She had lost the courage to start something new, but the message of the Bone Collector as­sured her that she could find it again. This powerful being represented the place within her that still stored the courage and talent that she felt had been stolen from her because of her loyalty to her parents’ wishes that she become an accountant and their criticism of her dream of running her own business. By aligning with this ancient wise Spirit within her, she could reclaim these lost parts of herself after all!

In the second position of the spread, representing the present point of vantage, was the Mountain. Kim realized that she was perceiving her life as a giant mountain she couldn't possibly climb and that the stress of the decision was overwhelming her. The message of the card was to take one step at a time, but that with each step, she would find herself closer to her goal.

In the third position, representing what you resist, Kim saw how Slow and Steady (as in "slow and steady wins the

race") would follow the Mountain. She rec­ognized that she didn’t have to jump into her new business feetfirst. She could take her time and plan her course carefully. She'd been feeling that she had to do ev­erything immediately and make overnight decisions. This card reminded her that in spite of her fear, faith was what had to lead her. As a reversed card, it also warned her to be careful and not be impulsive about her actions.

The Magical Map Shifter (reversed), in the position of unexpected help, remind­ed her that her boss may have betrayed her by letting her go in the manner he did, but the layoff was truly a blessing in disguise. Her boss reminded her of her father, and many of the unresolved issues that her fa­ther's passive-aggressive behavior triggered in her. Seen in this light, her boss was a powerful change agent, shifting her map.

In position five, signifying the next right action, the card Coming Apart con­firmed that it was indeed time to leave her job and begin her new career, but she didn't have to do it all at once. The cards

told a bigger story! She decided to take a part-time job in accounting and ready herself for starting up her organic bread business.

Last, she got her confirmation from the sixth position, which indicates the prob­able future destination. She would reap what she sowed in her Field of Dreams! It was a positive affirmation that her dream would come true.

The Soul's Intention

Each card depicts the soul’s intention, as well as the other positional meanings discussed in the previous section. You can ask, "What is my soul's intention re­garding the present situation?" or you can contemplate the last card you draw to gain deeper clarity, as it will reveal that if you look within, you can answer the ques­tion of why something is happening. The soul's intention is for you to grow, and it will show you the lessons you must learn in order to evolve into who you’re meant to become.

Here’s an example:

Donna was having problems with her husband, Vince, who had lost his job and was drinking too much. She wanted to buy a new house, but she recognized that until he found employment, that dream would have to wait. It frustrated her, and she didn't understand why he wouldn't go right out and seek another job. He began to remind her of her father, who had been an alcoholic and drank himself to death. She developed anxiety and started to act in ways that were controlling, projecting her fear onto Vince.

She asked the cards:

"What is my soul's intention regarding this situation?"

Donna drew one card: Deep Freeze. This card indicated that: (1) her dream was meant to die temporarily, and (2) she need­ed to recognize that something had died in her husband and he required the "win­ter" to hibernate and regain his strength until it was "spring again." She couldn't

rush him. Deep Freeze was also reminding her that she hadn't really dealt with her father's issues and how they had affected her. She needed to slow down and let the past go so that later, when she was ready, she could be reborn. Her husband was not her father, and she had to put her fear and need to control him "on ice."

After a calmer couple of months, dur­ing which Donna surrendered to the situ­ation, her husband got his "game back on" again and went for, and secured, an even better job than the one he had lost. He'd needed the time to come to peace with his loss; and she'd needed time to get in touch with her feelings, examine her relation­ship with her father, and forgive him. Her soul's intention brought her circumstances with her husband that helped her heal the past, in spite of how uncomfortable the situation was for a short while.

Whenever you do a one-card reading, that card should be interpreted as being in the position of present point of vantage, but you may wish to do a multiple-card reading for more clarity. Once you learn the meanings of each card and the posi­tions, feel free to be creative and make up your own new spreads, with certain posi­tions having specific significance for you. You'll be amazed by how the cards come alive for you!

When the Bone Collector appears, she is asking you to look closely at your cir­cumstances to see if you're fully present or

reacting out of past conditioning and un­conscious expectations.

Whenever we're wounded, especially when we're young, it’s as if something es­sential is stolen from us. We adapt, and ac­cept a particular version of the truth that then sets us up to behave a certain way in the future when faced with a situation that reminds us of the original event. What we know about ourselves thus becomes influ­enced by a perception of limitation.

You may feel unworthy or without courage; you may see yourself as flawed or unlovable, or expect to be criticized. No matter what your question, the Bone Col­lector reminds you that the truth is that you are a powerful being with limitless possibilities. She has kept safe what was stolen from you in the wounding, and is here for you as you reclaim it now. You have everything you believe you lack, and the Bone Collector is your inner resource. Act as if you have what you need and you'll find you have it after all. Anything is pos­sible. With awareness, the wounds of the past need not define you.

Reversed

The past has a way of repeating itself when you haven't learned the lesson inher­ent in the original situation. You're faced with this now. The Bone Collector is here to challenge you to see yourself as a whole being and not one who is perpetually try­ing to heal an old wound. You'll repeat the past if you don't reclaim the things you be­lieve were lost.

The information you seek lies in your history. Familiarity in this case isn't an in­vitation to dance the old dance once again; instead, it is a call to retreat and ch oose differently. The Bone Collector has a mes­sage: "If you do what you did, you'll get what you got." Her warning is delivered with kindness, for she has deep love and respect for you. She will protect you.

The Gentle Gardener is visiting you at this moment in your life to remind you that your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs

create the reality you experience. She is the embodiment of the energy within you that is sent out into the field of co-creation and ensures that all that you are is reflected in the world of form. Are you aware of your thoughts? What is their quality?

Believe in limitless possibility and you will see miracles unfold. The Gentle Gar­dener guarantees the integrity of every­thing you send out into the world. Stay positive and expect a wondrous return. Your garden is abundant with beauty.

Reversed

Do you harbor resentments? How often do you reinforce negativity by affirming lack and limitation? Every time you send out a desire for something but secretly harbor a belief that you’re undeserving of it, you plant weeds in the field of your dreams. When the Gentle Gardener ap­pears in the reversed position, she reminds you to be aware of any negative thoughts or selfish motives. She encourages you to step back and pay close attention to what

thought-seeds you send out into the world. Weeds choke the life out of your beautiful garden.

No need to fret, however, because once you recognize this, you can always remove a bad seed and replace it with a healthy one! Forgiveness is your most powerful restorative tool.

Wizard of Awareness

Mindfulness is about being observant, and remaining neutral about what goes on in the world around you. This applies to the environment within you, too. If you struggle inside yourself, stepping into an

observer position gives you a new, power­ful perspective that neutralizes any dis­comfort or overexcitement. You have the capacity to see things clearly now, unen­cumbered by opinion or desire.

Wearing the world as a loose garment requires you to adopt a sense that noth­ing that happens to you is personal. Peo­ple come and go; experiences evolve from one state to another in a continual shift­ing and change no matter how much you want things to stay the same. The Wizard of Awareness asks you to give up your need to define or limit what you're experiencing now. It's all good! l.et it be, and watch the miracle unfold without any direct influ­ence from you.

Reversed

The Wizard of Awareness comes to you in this position to warn you that too much force behind a desire for a specific outcome robs you of a true and full experience. Step back, take your energy away from your

situation, and focus on gratitude for the ever-changing conditions of life.

Are you, perhaps, trying to control the outcome of something because you don't trust in your highest good? Meditate, be still . . . and your answer will come with­out any effort on your part. Be a neutral observer and you'll see how this moment is but a small marker on the Map of your life's journey.

Spirit of place

Our ancient ancestors believed that every place has a Spirit looking after it or embodying it: just as we have a soul, the plants, trees, birds, mountains, and rivers have their own essences.

When the Spirit of Place arrives in your reading, it says that the answer to your query is in the overarching theme of your circumstances. Is your question about a struggle? The answer is to relax and let go of your need to control the situation. If your inquiry relates to finding love, then embody love rather than long for it. Once you find the essential truth that underlies your question and then name it, you’ll discover the answer you've been seeking. Your greatest power is your authenticity.

Reversed

Don't get entangled in details or desires that obscure the truth of your situation. Step back and ask yourself, What is the real nature of my inquiry? Even exquisitely seductive hidden agendas cannot conceal this. Trust your intuition, the Spirit of Place is whispering in your ear. You hold the power to tell the truth—first to yourself, then to the world. You can always distin­guish between an essence that is true and one that is "synthetic."

Be honest with yourself, and remain willing to let your situation be revealed for what it really is and not what you want it to be. An apple can't become an orange, just as a dog can never be a bird. Are you trying to change someone or something to suit your agenda? Only when you see things as they truly are will you find the real treasure.

Goblins are born when you're wounded and something essential is lost in that ex­perience. From that point on, as you forget

your wholeness, they remain with you in the shadows. There, they remind you of what brought them into being, by mim­icking your own voice, tricking you into believing that you're unworthy, victim­ized, or unlovable. They hold you hostage through low self-worth, self-sabotage, and the feeling that you're lacking what you need.

If Goblins pay you a visit, know that they represent the shadow of your own self, or someone else's, and that they're leading you into a potentially reactive situation. A Goblins card's appearance is an opportu­nity for growth, however, and a signal that you must love yourself. No human is with­out flaws. The Goblins' message is that you must release resentments and negative self­talk. Within you is the spark of the Divine. Ask Spirit to help heal you. Miracles can and do happen. Let go of the negativity.

Reversed

It's often difficult to deal with some­one else's issues, because they impact your

own. No one is perfect, but in this case you're particularly vulnerable to being ma­nipulated. Don't take this world personal­ly.
